Bose SoundTouch Cloud Shutdown — May 6, 2026
⚠️ Update: cloud shutdown has happened (May 6, 2026)
Since the shutdown, many users have started running into glitches — playback hiccups, presets behaving strangely, or sources that no longer load.
Our recommendation: do NOT try to "fix" these issues by:
- unplugging and reconnecting your speakers
- performing a factory reset
- reinstalling the official Bose SoundTouch app
Why
Critical data that currently keeps some functionality alive appears to exist only as cached data on the devices themselves, with no longer any working cloud backend to refresh it from.
Examples
- The Internet Radio source (the feature that allows SoundTouch speakers to play arbitrary web streams) appears to be provisioned from the cloud during boot. Once a speaker fully reboots, that source may disappear permanently — and with it, hardware presets may stop functioning as well.
- Account/authentication state also appears to be cached locally and may no longer be recoverable after a reset or full power loss.
A reboot or factory reset may therefore result in irreversible loss of additional functionality.
If your speakers are currently still working — even partially — the safest approach for now is likely to leave them powered on and avoid resetting or reconfiguring them unless absolutely necessary.
↓ The original pre-shutdown analysis below is preserved for reference — most of what was expected has materialized as predicted.
Bose is shutting down the cloud services for SoundTouch speakers on May 6, 2026. This page explains what changes, how to test the impact yourself, and what options you have. If you're looking for ways to continue using your SoundTouch speakers after the shutdown: with BoSonar you play your own audio streams and control your speakers directly, without relying on the Bose cloud.
What is happening?
The SoundTouch ecosystem has relied on Bose cloud servers for features like internet radio (TuneIn), preset management, and parts of the official Bose app. After May 6, these cloud services will be permanently discontinued.
What stops working?
Based on official Bose communication and our own observations, the following features will likely stop working or be significantly impacted: (see the official Bose statement)
- Internet radio via TuneIn — will no longer be available through the Bose app
- Radio presets stored in the cloud — physical preset buttons may stop working for radio streams
- TuneIn integration — completely dependent on Bose cloud
- Parts of the official Bose SoundTouch app — may lose functionality
What continues to work:
- Bluetooth audio
- AUX / HDMI inputs
- Spotify Connect
- AirPlay (on supported models)
- Multiroom grouping (local network)

How to test the impact yourself
If you want to see what the shutdown will actually mean for your devices, you can simulate it by blocking Bose cloud domains in your router.
Block these two domains to approximate post-shutdown behavior:
content.api.bose.io streaming.bose.com
Important! Blocking the domains alone is not enough. After the block is active, disconnect each speaker from power (unplug it) for about 30 seconds and plug it back in. Many settings and cached data survive on the device after a cloud outage until the next time it loses power — a device that stays on, or only warm-reboots, typically masks the real effects for a limited time. Only a cold boot shows you what will really be different long-term after May 6.
This allows you to see how your devices behave without cloud support — including whether features like internet radio or presets continue to work. It's also a useful way to validate apps that claim to be a “complete Bose app replacement after May 6.” Based on our analysis, many of these apps will lose essential functionality (such as internet radio) unless they implement significant changes.
For completeness, here is a broader list of Bose-related domains observed in device communication. It is currently unclear which will be fully or partially affected:
content.api.bose.io events.api.bosecm.com media.bose.io streaming.bose.com streamingoauth.bose.com worldwide.bose.com
Blocking more domains than the two above may break functionality that will not be impacted by the shutdown, so it is not recommended for normal testing.
Other approaches
Several community projects are working on different approaches to keep SoundTouch speakers usable after the shutdown. They generally fall into two categories:
Self-hosted server replacements
These projects run a local server (e.g. on a Raspberry Pi, NAS, or PC) that replaces parts of the Bose cloud. Examples include SoundCork, Überböse, and SoundTouch Hybrid 2026. They aim for broader compatibility but require technical setup and ongoing maintenance on your own infrastructure.
Mobile and desktop apps
These apps communicate directly with the SoundTouch speakers over the local network. Examples include Better ST (iOS), Controller for Bose SoundTouch (iOS, since 2016), Controller Pro for SoundTouch (Android), and BoSonar (Android). They focus on specific functionality such as internet radio playback, multiroom control, or device settings.

How BoSonar keeps your speakers smart
BoSonar is designed to work independently of the Bose cloud.
With BoSonar you play your own audio streams directly on your SoundTouch speakers — combined with multiroom control, presets and device settings in a single app:
- Your own audio streams via DLNA — set up or import
- Audio playback via DLNA — streams directly to your speakers without cloud
- 12 presets managed locally — 6 hardware + 6 virtual presets
- Multiroom groups via local SoundTouch API
- Device settings (bass, treble, name, Bluetooth pairing) via local API
